The Maldives in five stars: five islands to escape into blue

Somewhere between the blue of the sky and the turquoise of the lagoon, time loses its meaning. The Maldives are not a place you visit. You immerse yourself in them, barefoot in the sand, with the Indian Ocean as your only horizon.

For this selection, we have stayed strictly with resorts rated five stars by local classification. Five islands, five personalities. You can find all current dates under Last Minute Maldives.

Furaveri Maldives: the promise of Raa Atoll

In the south of Raa Atoll lies a tropical island whose house reef begins just 50 to 100 metres from the beach. Furaveri Maldives combines refined décor with the island's vegetation, so that architecture and nature flow into one another. You reach it by domestic flight and speedboat or, for a supplement, by seaplane.

The villas are generous: island pool villas of around 155 square metres with a private pool, ocean villas on stilts with a jacuzzi on the terrace, and the beach pool jacuzzi villa of around 200 square metres, inspired by the traditional Maldivian fishing boat, the dhoni. Six à la carte restaurants make sure no two evenings are alike.

For those who look for art when they travel: Oaga Art Resort in North Malé Atoll combines modern island life with Maldivian art, culture and creativity. The beach villas are decorated with paintings of folk tales or modelled on traditional boatyards. 80 villas, an underwater restaurant and only around 45 minutes by speedboat from Malé airport.

On the island of Mudhdhoo in Baa Atoll lies Dusit Thani Maldives, only around 15 minutes by boat from the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Hanifaru Bay, where you can snorkel with manta rays in season. Back at the resort, beach and overwater pool villas, four restaurants and sunsets await, sunsets worth leaving the beach early for.

Taj Coral Reef Resort: the small island

Only 62 rooms on an island of around 460 by 600 metres: Taj Coral Reef Resort is a quiet, idyllic retreat with its own house reef, around 50 minutes by speedboat from Malé. The premium water villas stand on stilts above the water, with direct access to the sea.

JA Manafaru: the hideaway in the north
