What to discover from tomorrow

From September 17 to 27, Zurich once again becomes a citywide stage for design. Now in its fifth edition, Zurich Design Weeks brings eleven days of exhibitions, installations, talks, workshops and walks to more than 40 locations across the city. This year’s theme, OUT OF…, invites designers and visitors to step outside familiar contexts and rethink materials, spaces and ideas. Much of the programme is free and open to the public.

What to see

01 — Opening Night

The festival officially opens on Thursday, September 17. From 5–8 pm, the Museum für Gestaltung at Ausstellungsstrasse hosts the Zurich Design Weeks opening, while vernissages and events begin across the city.

02 — IKEA × Raw Color:

Make space for…From September 17–20, IKEA Switzerland and Dutch design studio Raw Color turn simple storage boxes into an immersive installation at Maagplatz. Rather than focusing purely on storage, the project asks a broader question: what do we actually want to make space for in our lives?

03 — EMERGING at House of Interiors

Six emerging designers and studios present work at the transition between education and professional practice. Responding to the theme OUT OF…, EMERGING brings together new perspectives on objects, materials and contemporary design practice.

04 — Objects of Desire

At Iria Degen Zurich, historical design pieces enter into dialogue with contemporary works in an exhibition connected to Nilufar. Bronze, marble and glass appear alongside works by designers including Gio Ponti, Michael Anastassiades and Martino Gamper.

05 — neue räume 26

From September 24–27, Halle 550 in Zurich-Oerlikon hosts the 13th edition of the international interior design exhibition neue räume. More than 100 exhibitors come together across approximately 8,000 square metres of exhibition space.

Plus: Poster Safari

Design also moves beyond galleries and showrooms. The Poster Safari places animated posters around Zurich, adding a digital layer to graphic design in public space.

Design beyond objects

One of the strengths of Zurich Design Weeks is its broad understanding of design. The programme connects objects and interiors with questions around society, business, the environment, craftsmanship and urban life. Talks, workshops and guided walks provide a closer look at the processes and ideas behind what is being shown.
